In our research, we used a gratitude journal, but feelings of gratitude can also be enhanced by a daily gratitude reflection around the dinner table, having children and adolescents make posters of what they are grateful for, or keeping a gratitude jar where children and teens write down something they are grateful for each week, the study states.The challenge of dialing down the level o f materialism among todays youth need not fall solely on the shoulders of busy parents, overburdened teachers, or underfunded governmental agencies.The researchers acknowledge that a grateful disposition may not be possible for very young children since it requires certain social cognitive skills - perspective taking skills, theory of mind, empathy- that may not be developed in young children. But adults certainly have the mental fortitude for it. Learning to be grateful for what you already have has been shown to boost the wellbeing of adults.When you teach yourself to focus on what went right in your day, you begin to not worry about what went wrong as much. But theres totenstill a long way to go before everyone is fully represented in the business sector. And one of the largest groups thats often left out of decision-making positions constitutes roughly 50% of the population.That group - women - accounts for only 20.4% of director positions on boards at major public companies across the world, according to a recent report by international executive search firm Egon Zehnder. The Whos Really on Board? report studied data about 1,610 companies in 44 countries and found that change is happening, but its slow.In the United States, for example, progress has nearly screeched to a halt in the past half-decade. Since 2012, the percentage of female directors on boards has increased by just over 3%, compar ed to the nearly 7% increase worldwide in the past six years.Theres also a fairly large group of companies that belong to the One on Board Club, meaning that they have at least one female board member. Amid the countries whose large cap companies are part of that club, almost half have laws requiring that boards meet a quota of female directors.The magic numberBut on boards that usually consist of nine to 13 members, and sometimes expand to include 20 directors, one persons voice can easily be drowned out. Thats why Egon Zehnder purports that boards need a critical mass of three women to successfully incorporate the female perspective.That assertion is backed by research that indicates when someone is a small minority in a room, their voice often goes unheard. The phenomenon has financial repercussions - according to MSCI analysis, companies that have at least three women on a board perform better based on some measurements.Some countries are on their way to meeting the magic numbe r, or have already surpassed it. In France, on average, 42% of directors are female. But those gender ratios plummet elsewhere. In countries such as Japan, Hungary and South Korea, the average percentage of board members who are women is in the single digits.In the U.S. and Canada, where the average number of board members is 11 people, only 2.5 of them are women. While thats edging toward the three-person threshold, its not quite there.So theres still work to be done. AndEgon Zehnder has at least one solution - fixing the pipeline problem by selecting first-time female directors. There are women who are willing and able to serve they just have to be given the opportunity. And when they prove themselves, data suggests that everyone at the company wins.

The benefits of being kind- or at the very least courteous- far outweigh the effort you put in. Do random acts of kindness. Compliment someone. If a retail or food-service worker makes a mistake, be understanding and patient. Kind people live longer than unkind people. I know myself better than anyone else. I don’t let anyone else’s opinions control what I do, what I wear, or what I say. Other people’s opinions are suggestions- take them or leave them. Everyone else is as worried and insecure as you are. Some people just hide it better. It doesn’t mean that they are any smarter or better than you. Laugh it off. If you make a mistake, fall down, or do something dumb, just laugh it off. Other people (and you) will forget it a lot faster if you just let it roll off your back. EVERYONE makes dumb mistakes. Everyone. You aren’t alone, and you aren’t the biggest idiot in the world. Give yourself a break. “Fitting in” is highly overrated. Be you. Confidence is sexy. Besides, great leaders didn’t get where they are by following the crowd. Don’t stay in a bad relationship, even if it’s “for the kids.” Oftentimes, kids really thrive outside the bounds of a toxic relationship. It’s just stuff. Sure, stuff gets broken- oftentimes accidentally by people you love- and that’s annoying. But your stuff can be replaced. You can never erase the hurtful words you say to the person you love, because they broke your stuff. Stuff is never, ever as important as those you love. You’re probably a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for being. Don’t judge. You don’t know all the facts. That lady speeding down the road with her toddler unbuckled in the back seat may be panicked, heading for the hospital for an emergency that you can’t see. That “big kid” having a “tantrum” in the store may be on the autism spectrum, and is having a melt down, which he/she hates as much as you do. The fat lady in the bikini may have lost 100 lbs so far, and she’s pretty darn proud of what she’s done. Don’t shame people for smoking, drinking, or being fat. We all have our faults and bad habits. As a pretty famous guy is alleged to have said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Never lose your inner child. Dance. Sing. Skip. Tell poop jokes (not to strangers, though). Go down the slide. Bounce at the bouncy house, if the attendant says adults are welcome. This is an advantage to being older. When you’re 20, people often think you’re “too old” to do these things, but when a 50-something does them, it’s charming. And if people think it’s dumb, screw them. See #2 above. Don’t make major life decisions to please other people. Maybe your parents expect you to go to college, but you just want to go to trade school and become an auto mechanic, because that’s where your heart is. Or maybe (as in my case) your parents don’t want you to go to college, but you really want to be an attorney. Live life for YOU. The world needs good auto mechanics and good attorneys. It’ll all work out. Don’t beat yourself up about stuff. Do what you can to fix your mistakes, then move on. Guilt is only good for pushing you toward making things right again. After that, it becomes shame, and shame is a toxic substance which will eat you up inside. Same for worry. Enjoy life. Literally, stop to smell and admire the flowers. Wonder. Smile at strangers and see how many you can get to smile back. Have fun. Life goes by really, really fast. Live each day so that, at the end, you’re reveling in how amazing your life was, not regretting all the things you did or didn’t do. Life is better after 50. It often means  theyre interested in  you- they believe youd be a good fit for the role at hand and can imagine you in this job. So long as you find the position and employer compelling, youll want to keep things that way, and keep the recruiter on your side to help you land the job. If and when you’re contacted by a recruiter, try following these five tips to have them fighting for you to land the job: 1. Be honest. Recruiters go through dozens (if not hundreds) of job applications a week, so it’s pretty easy for them to spot glitches that could cost you the job. If you’re trying to fill in an employment gap, or add in skills that you havent really honed yet, it’s going to be obvious to a recruiter. So be brutally honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Remember, if you have some lies on your resume- and they are discovered later- it could not only cost you your credibility, but the relationship you have already established with your recruiter. 2. Make them a priority. Let’s say that a recruiter contacts you on Monday morning and asks for an updated version of your resume. When Wednesday night rolls around and you still haven’t gotten the information over to him, you might have already lost out on your chance to work with the recruiter. After all, recruiters are working with many potential job candidates at the same time for various roles, and if you’re not on top of your job search game, he might just move on to a candidate who is. That’s why you should always put a priority on whatever the recruiter needs in order to get your foot in the door at the company you’d like to work for. Being respectful of the recruiter’s time can go a long way in helping you get hired. 3. Show interest. Recruiters often work directly with companies and, as such, are looking to fill vacancies with people who really want to work at those organizations. So if you’re feeling kinda meh about the role, or aren’t really interested in applying for a position with the organization, be upfront about it. Even if it turns out that the role isn’t right for you, or you don’t get hired for the position, it’s best to adopt an attitude of gratitude. Thank the recruiter for his efforts anyway, and see if he can keep you on his radar for future job opportunities. But for some young people, camp evokes memories of Neil Armstrong and Apollo missions. Huntsville, AL-based Space Camp has been giving kids a chance to dream about whats out there for decades. So whats it up to now? Space Camp has changed since it started in 1982 and it used to be a space shuttle-oriented program, says Pat Ammons, director of communications for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, where Space Camp makes its home. Learning Science The camp added International Space Station modules that are still a part of the program, says Ammons, highlighting that the campers learn about the science behind it. We are moving away from our shuttle simulators and more into missions: Mission to Mars, lunar missions, and more. You always get to do the one-sixth gravity chair and always get the trainer that simulates tumbling in space. But what we really want them to come up with is why some of these different activities work. Whats the math, whats the science behind some of this? Its also about working together and problem solving. Looking at the real-world applications of what theyre learning in school. Ammons says campers also join illustrious company. Former campers include Bobak Ferdowsi, who was part of the Mars Rover program and works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Kathleen Rubins, a NASA astronaut. On a training simulator. Image: Space Camp What Is a Happy Camper, Alex? 11-year-old Aarav Zutshi attended the five-day program in Spring. It was so much fun, he says. My favorite part was a game that was like Jeopardy! based on space, and the winning team got a badge that they could bring home. But beyond that game show-like moment, he found himself enjoying many experiences. The biggest challenge was designing a space suit. We worked together as a team and I did the legs portion of the suit, says Zutshi, whose hometown is Edison, NJ. Using Kevlar, metal, and more, he took great pride in the work. He also felt a little change in the spring of his step. I got to do the one-sixth gravity chair which was like being on the moon, he says. I thought it would be easy walking around but it wasnt. I ended up doing the bunny hop. Camp also challenged him with rocket construction. We were given a packet and had some wooden pieces and metal pieces and there were instructions to build a rocket, he says. We also had a parachute but we didnt want it to burn so we put padding on there. Ours got stuck in a tree because it went really high. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center also has a robotics camp offering activities for air, land, and water robotics and focuses on entrepreneurism. Campers are shown how to develop an idea and take it into the business world, Ammons says. Ammons says another positive is that Space Camp brings young people together from all over the world. There are so many different backgrounds coming together and there can be great bonds that can take place, she says. Space Camp opens you up to possible new experiences on many different levels.
