Dont wait until an opportunity says, See ya!
Dont wait until an opportunity says, See ya! This was from a call I took yesterday. The conversation went something like this: Caller: Hi, um, my name is Bob. I want to know about your resume service and when you can finish it. Because I need it soon. Me: Hi Bob. Well, lets skip to your most important question. How quickly do you need it? Bob: I need it by tomorrow. I saw a job position I want to apply for at Johnson Johnson and the position closes tomorrow. Me: Oh! Tomorrow. Has the position been open a while or did you hear about it from someone? Bob: I heard about it through a buddy of mine who works there. Its for Regional Sales Management position my dream job with my dream company. He told me about it awhile ago, but I didnt really think about it much until last night when we met for a beer and he reminded me it was still open. But it closes tomorrow. He said to send my resume in to the HR person sometime in the morning. Me: Well, its 4:30 in the afternoon and I leave my office in an hour and a half. I wont be able to do it in that amount of time We talked for a little bit more and Bob even emailed me his resume. It was pretty bad (think Microsoft Words basic resume template lots of white space, left-aligned, bullet-ridden and worse, hadnt been updated since 2001). The thing that got me was that he had known about the position for a month, assumed hed have time to fix up his resume, then consequently forgot about the position, and was now in an all-out panic. Weve all done it with one thing or anotherputting off something we really shouldnt have, and then regretting it later. I felt bad for Bob because I knew his chances of getting the job with the old resume were slim to none. Worse, when he started talking about his experience and his excellent accomplishments I thought he would have probably had the chance. He said he was going to work on it himself and hope for the best. So, the moral of the story is UPDATE YOUR RESUME TODAY. Dont wait until your dream opportunity passes you by.

The Best Cover Letter Writing Tips, Plus a Free Template
The Best Cover Letter Writing Tips, Plus a Free Template Itâs a good time to be a job seeker: U.S. job growth is strong, unemployment is on a steady decline, and openings are at an all-time high. That doesnât make the search any less daunting. Differentiating yourself from every other job seeker on the market is no small feat, and the monotony of filling out online applications can make the task downright exhausting. Thatâs where a killer cover letter comes in. Done right, a great cover letter is like a secret weapon for catching a hiring managerâs attention. Next to your resume, itâs one of the most important, underutilized tools at your disposal. Here are some cover letter writing tips, and a free, downloadable template, to make yours stand out. 1. Personalize Every cover letter you write should be tailored to the job youâre applying for â" just like your resume. Study the job posting carefully, and make a quick list of any essential qualifications. âJob seekers really struggle with what to say on a cover letter,â says Jessica Holbrook Hernandez, President and CEO of Great Resumes Fast. âTaking a second to think about why youâre applying, and why youâre a good fit for the company, makes the process a lot easier.â If youâre adding a cover letter to an online application, use a business letter format with a header and contact information. If youâre sending an email, itâs OK to leave out the header, but be sure to provide a phone number (and an attached resume, of course). Make sure youâre clear about the position youâre applying for. Avoid nameless salutations â" it might take a little Google research, and some LinkedIn outreach, but finding the actual name of the positionâs hiring manager will score you major brownie points. âDo not start a cover letter with, âto whom it may concern,ââ Holbrook Hernandez says. âIt concerns no one.â 2. Tell a Story To grab a recruiterâs attention, a good narrativeâ"with a killer opening lineâ"is everything. âThe cover letter is a story,â says Satjot Sawhney, a resume and career strategist with Loft Resumes. âWhat is the most interesting thing youâre doing thatâs relevant to this job?â Use that to guide your letter. Ideally, the story that drives your resume will focus on a need at the company youâre applying for. If youâre a PR professional, maybe you have a list of clients in an industry the team wants to break into. If youâre in marketing, a successful promotional campaign might be the ticket in. âA hiring manager wants to see results-driven accomplishments with a past employer,â says Holbrook Hernandez. âIf youâve done it before, you can deliver it again.â If you have a career gap or are switching industries, address it upfront. âIf thereâs anything unique in your career history, call that out in the beginning,â says professional resume writer Brooke Shipbaugh. (Hereâs a downloadable sample.) 3. Use Bullet Points to Show Impact Hiring managers are usually slammed with applications, so short, quick cover letters are preferable to bloated ones, says Paul Wolfe, Senior Vice President of human resources at job site Indeed. âMake your cover letter a brief, bright reference tool,â he says. âThe easier you can make it on the recruiter the better.â Bullet points are a good tool for pulling out numbers-driven results. Job seekers in creative fields like art and design can use bullets to break down their most successful project. Those in more traditional roles (like the one in the template), can hammer off two or three of their most impressive accomplishments. 4. Highlight Culture Fit Itâs often overlooked, but a major function of the cover letter is to show a company how well youâd mesh with the culture. As you research a potential employer, look for culture cues on the company website, social media, and review sites like Glassdoor. Oftentimes, employers will nod to culture in a job posting. If the ad mentions a âteam environment,â it might be good to play up a recent, successful collaboration. If the company wants a âself-starter,â consider including an achievement that proves you donât need to be micromanaged. The tone of your letter can also play to culture. âThe cover letter is a great place to show [an employer] how you fit into their world,â Shipbaugh says. âShow some personality.â 5. End with an Ask The goal of a cover letter is to convince the person reading it to make the next move in the hiring process â" with a phone call, interview, or otherwise. Ending on a question opens that door without groveling for it. âYou have to approach this with a non-beggar mentality,â Sawhney says. âHaving an âaskâ levels the playing field.â Related: What Your Resume Should Look Like in 2018

Defining The Renaissance Personality - Work It Daily
Defining The Renaissance Personality - Work It Daily Do you wish you would figure out your true passion in life once and for all? Have you ever found yourself hoping to live for a few hundred years so you can satisfy all your interests? Do you lose interest in things you thought would interest you forever? These are typical âRenaissance Personalityâ statements. I notice when I talk to people about this concept, a lot of folks jump up yelling, âYes! Iâm one, too!â Others are not sure. Iâve also noticed some people think they own a Renaissance Personality, but don't. Being aware of your personality type is the foundation from which you can make changes in your life and create a modern-day âRenaissance lifeâ that is exciting and stimulating. So, if youâve already identified yourself as a Renaissance Personality, youâll be on your way to a new perspective on life in general and you as a person. But in case youâre not quite sure, letâs get really clear on what a Renaissance Personality is, and what itâs not. You can spot a Renaissance Personality based on these three characteristics â" with thanks to author M. Lobenstine (âThe Renaissance Soulâ). They are as follows: 1 . Prefers Variety Over A Single-Minded Focus This has nothing to do with the ability or inability to focus on what youâre doing at that moment. As youâll see later on, itâs not ADHD in disguise. Variety comes in many forms: Some Renaissance Personalities pursue many interests simultaneously, others on a rotating basis, or they do it one at a time, after which they move on. 2. Enjoys A Work Style That Doesn't Follow A Linear, Predictable Process Their emphasis is on growth and evolution instead of rigid adherence to a plan. This is also why the traditional time management systems typically donât work for Renaissance Personalities. What we need is flexible plans. With emphasis on flexible! 3. Defines Success By Challenges Mastered Instead of defining success by how far they've climbed the ladder, Renaissance Personalities define it by what they've mastered. They love the steep learning curve when learning something new. Once theyâve solved a problem, theyâre done. This is why their definition of success and completion is very different from other people. If you fit the following criteria, you are most likely NOT a Renaissance Personality: You have ADHD or you suffer from depression. Both conditions mimic certain Renaissance Personality traits, but arenât. Of course, these conditions and a Renaissance Personality are not mutually exclusive, but if you do have those issues, you may mistakenly believe you are a Renaissance Personality. You are very happy to be absorbed in one career or field. In other words: youâre a specialist. Professions that typically lend themselves to this category are musicians, doctors, scientists, athletes, financiers, and mathematicians. Sure, you relax with a hobby, but youâre not really passionate about anything but your own field. Youâre not choosing a direction because you are afraid to be mediocre or even fail when you commit to something. But deep down you know what you want to do. You like to job hop because you keep finding better offers. However, youâre staying in the same field. Therefore, you do not qualify as a Renaissance Personality. 5 Times Its OK to Back out of a Position You Already Accepted (and How to Do It)
5 Times Its OK to Back out of a Position You Already Accepted (and How to Do It) So, you got a job interview. You went you conquered. And in the end, you accepted the job offer. You went home feeling good about your performance and then it sank in. You dont actually want the job...Maybe you took the interview for practice or because youre notlage one to say no to any opportunity. Many times, its worth entertaining the conversation, at the very least, because you never know what can come of it. But perhaps you really started thinking about what itd be like to work that job only after you left the office, when the pressure was off. And you realized that its actually quite far from your home, and you dont want to make the commute every day. Or perhaps youre not really as comfortable as you said you were with the salary, but you were too anxious to negotiate on the spot.Whatever the case, can you back out of a job offer after youve already accepted it?FGBer Ali K. asked the FGB Communit y this very question.Last week I was offered and accepted a new role that I wanted very much, she writes. I was excited as could be and the company seems great. On Monday, I very unexpectedly got another offer from a second company that I had interviewed with, as well. I would prefer to go to work for the second company as the offer is much better, and the role is quite similar. So now Im left in the lage of withdrawing from the first company. Im an absolute NERVOUS WRECK about doing it. Any tips? Advice?Of course, FGBers came chiming in as a collective sounding board for Ali. Heres what they had to say about the times it is indeed okay to back out of a job offer youve already accepted.1. Back out when you know in your gut that its not right. This happens more often than you might think my husband once received three good offers within a week, and he felt like he had to stick with the first one because he had given his acceptance, an anonymous FGBer shared. Fast forward a few weeks, and it was clear this job was not a good fit. He ended up calling company two to ask if they had filled the role they had not, so he went to work there. In his gut, he knew job two was better, but he felt this obligation because he has accepted the first. As a hiring manager, herself, this user says that she has seen candidates back out after accepting an offer for a variety of reasons, and she tries not to hold it against them just because she felt they were a good fit and wanted to hire them.2. Back out if you feeling like youd be doing wrong by yourself if you dont. Now you get to choose, which is amazing, and also, potentially, scary as hell, said FGB community member Keri Wilson. Sometimes were nervous about doing something because we know how we would feel if it happened to us. But they arent you. They are HR departments, and youre not the first person who ever turned down an offer I assure you.Wilson said that, sometimes, we are nervous because we have limiting belief systems that tell us that its rude to accept and then go back on our acceptance.Sure it is or not, she said. You do you Women (especially) are not brought up to do you. Were brought up to please. And, if youre a pleaser (like me), it may feel excruciating to even consider letting someone down. Do it. It wont kill you I promise And, if the first company is at all professional, theyll understand and maybe even hire you one day for a bigger, better lokalitt if you stay in touch with them. You never know.3. Back out so long as there are no legal repercussions. If youve already signed a contract, make sure there are no legal penalties for changing your mind, said LadyPele, another FGBer. Then dont postpone. The sooner you let the hiring manager know, the sooner the employer can re-start the process. I would probably decline in person or with a call and then follow up with a very polite letter thanking everyone for their time and explaining that you will be accepting a position at another compan y that you think will be a better fit. A polite apology for any inconvenience the decision may cause probably wouldnt go amiss.4. Back out if you dont think its the right fit.I work in recruitment and... recruiters and hiring managers are never happy with reneges, said FGBer Kam. But you whats even worse? A poor hiring fit that leaves the team in the lurch six to 12 months down the line.Backing out of an accepted offer is never comfortable, she says, but going about it the right way can go a long way in minimizing the reputational impact. Were all philanthropisch and, at the end of the day, we recognize that people will do what is best for themselves, she went on. But when that is done with minimal or, in some cases no communication at all, it leaves a lasting negative impression.5. Back out if the first place isnt willing to or cannot change their offer (and you still want that job).Give the first place a chance to change their offer, advised FGBer Christie Ko. If the only reason yo ure accepting the other offer is because the pay and benefit are better, then you should tell them that. They may say no, but you should give them the option. Just do it very politely and humbly. Theyre human beings. They will understand it. And either they can match it or they cant. How Long Will Candidates Wait for a Job Offer - Spark Hire
How Long Will Candidates Wait for a Job Offer - Spark HireSo, you have a couple of great candidates in the line-up for your new position. You interviewed with them a week ago and are still trying to make a decision with your coworkers and the other hiring managers. On top of that, you have a ton of work piling up that you have to take care of as well during this hiring process. Unfortunately, youve let the candidates wait on the back burner while you figure everything out. Three weeks after your interviews with the candidates you finally come to a decision and make a job offer. Problem is, the candidate has moved on and is no longer interested. Or perhaps they have already been offered another position elsewhere. All of that time spent is now wasted and you are left with no one to fill your position. You can go with your second choice, but they were second for a reason. This is a situation you want to avoid as the hiring manager trying to fill an open position. Waiting too long to mak e a job offer can turn candidates off. How long will candidates wait before you offer them a position?First and foremost, when you tell a candidate that they should be expecting a job offer by the end of the week and never follow up with them, youre only hurting yourself. For you to make a statement like that, the candidate must have really piqued your interest and impressed you in the hiring process. Therefore, why make them wait longer than you said they had to? That is why you should never tell a candidate that they should be expecting a job offer if you are not positive you are going to make one. That said, if you still make an offer but it is weeks later they still might be hesitant to accept.Though there arent any hardcore numbers out there on how long you can make a candidate wait before you make a job offer, its safe to say that it has the shelf-life of dairy two weeks. As hiring manager, you know there are a lot of factors that weigh into the decision-making and hiring proc ess. First and foremost, if this position is part of a greater team, then you are going to want to get the input from other team members and managers. It can be difficult to find a time when everyone on the team can meet, but it is important that you do it in a timely manner. Especially if there is a candidate you think would be perfect for the position. If they are a top candidate, then its highly likely another company will move in to sweep them up as well.Furthermore, savvy job seekers know that they should not give up on their job search until they have a hardcore job offer. Its the old saying, Dont put all your eggs in one basket. It would be foolish of a job seeker to wait on a job offer from one company when they could be continuing their job search and increasing their chances of snagging a job. That is why implementing video interviews into your hiring process can really shave some time off and make it much easier to collaborate on a new hire.Collaborating on a hire can tak e a lot of time. As stated earlier, it can be really difficult to get everyone together to discuss a candidate. With video interviews, you can share with other members of your team and managers the recorded job interview you had with a candidate. They can review it on their own time and see for themselves if this job seeker is qualified to fill the position. Then once you bring the candidate in for the in-person job interview, the other team members will be more willing to accept your decision since they already got a taste for what this candidate is like.No matter how you go about the hiring process, you should not let top candidates wait on the back burner too long while you try and make a decision. Two weeks should be your limit, but even that is a long time to wait for a job offer that may or may not be made. If you know you want a candidate, then hop on it quick and offer them the job. Waiting may be the downfall of your hiring process. What is the longest you will make candidat es wait before you make them a job offer?
